Hardware  & Software Prices - good advice!

Computer system prices continue to tumble as technology matures. But even as prices fall you still demand value for money, little likelihood of failure and a reasonable opportunity to take advantage of new technology in the future. Often a customer will simply want the cheapest. Buying on price alone is ALWAYS risky business!

Some purchasers will focus solely on the CPU clock speed, the amount of RAM and the size of the hard disk. Today the performance of a computer is determined by many additional parameters. We are prepared to explain the differences between different specifications, so please ask. We will advise you on the likely life of new hardware and of any limitations of which we are aware.

Of course a specific single item of hardware or software can often be purchased on the basis of the lowest price from potential suppliers, but make sure that the supplier

Watch out for gray marketers who sell cut price software that was imported from (say) Canada and is only licensed for that market - you just might have to go to Canada for the upgrades, patches or support!! In some cases the software is simply pirated, and in others the result of violent robberies. And do make sure that it is the current version of the software you are buying and not a superseded version!  Check out the new penalties for breaches of the copyright act before you go shopping, it might just save you a short holiday!!

Discounts are given for a reason - to boost sales, especially at end of product life. Endeavour to have all of your business hardware similar. It is desirable that all software is the same version to minimise management costs. Check best purchasing options for software BEFORE agreeing to a hardware purchase. Upgrades, OEM and corporate licensing options for small organisations CAN SAVE YOU MONEY.

With the rapid changes in technology and the foreign exchange rate, the price of many components change within a few days. So always obtain the latest prices. If you don't act on the quotation within a few days, then ask for an update before you do. If you wish to compare competitors quotations, ensure that they  give you a written quote, including the specifications. If you have a question about why a competitors price is differs, ask them to explain the differences, and get advice from an independent party.

You might think that a "brand name" PC or a special price PC is great value. Sometimes it is, but not always. These systems may have no upgrade capability and failures require special and expensive "brand name" components, or worse, that the entire PC is junk. Most PCs share certain common components - not similar - the same. Good suppliers can supply many brand name systems, but best value is from a system specified to suit your particular needs.  Make sure that you know the suppliers of the major components.
